Audition Process
The four areas of the audition are as follows:
1) Prepared Selection #1 - Patriotic Pieces Students will have a copy of the selection in their audition room. For this prepared starting pitch will be given, as well as the tonic chord, followed by a repetition of the pitch. The student will then sing the selection a cappella. Students will be evaluated on pitch, accuracy, rhythm, and diction. This portion of the audition is worth 20 points.
-Sopranos will sing, “America the Beautiful” in the key of C Major.
-Altos will sing “America the Beautiful” in the key of B-flat Major.
-Tenors will sing “America” (My Country 'Tis Of Thee) in the key of G Major.
-Basses/Baritones will sing “America” (My Country ‘Tis Of Thee) in the key of E flat Major.
2) Scales and Triads Students will be given a starting pitch. They are to sing a major scale both up and down. They may use solfege, numbers, or neutral syllables. The upper Do may or may not be repeated.
-Sopranos will sing an E major scale.
-Altos will sing a C major scale.
-Tenors will sing a G major scale.
-Basses will sing a D major scale.
The students will then be given a starting pitch to sing a major triad (no upper Do) that will be based on the 1, 4 or 5 of the scale they sang. They may use solfege, numbers, or neutral syllables. Lastly, the students will be given a starting pitch to sing a minor triad (no upper Do) that is NOT be related to the scale they sang. They may use solfege, numbers, or neutral syllables
3) Prepared Selection II – Festival Music-Student will sing a portion of the following pieces:
-Pie Jesu Gabriel Faure Arr. Robinson
-Come to the Music Joseph Martin
Students will know ahead of time what the possible audition sections will be from the music, and this information will be included in the fall newsletter. The singer will receive instructions from the recording, and then hear the starting pitch. Once the piano accompaniment has begun, the judge will visually cue the singer to begin and the student will then sing along with the piano accompaniment from the recording. The students are again judged on tone, rhythm, pitch accuracy, and diction. Please note that the specific section chosen for the audition will not announced until that day, so it is extremely important for the students to learn both pieces in their entirety.
4) Overall Tone Quality The students will be evaluated on their overall tone quality throughout the audition
